What is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia causes male breasts to form. In boys and young men, the cause is usually hormonal. In older men, the condition results from excess fat and lax skin.

Gynecomastia is not serious, but when hormonal issues are involved, it might be associated with thyroid problems or even cancer. Young men with the condition should see a physician to determine if a disease is present. When hormonal issues are involved, glandular tissue will probably be removed during the surgery.

What is Gynecomastia Surgery?

For our patients in Philadelphia gynecomastia surgery is a way to surgically correct the sagging skin and excess fatty tissue caused by gynecomastia. Whether the cause is hormonal or aging, Dr. Subbio can create a treatment plan to reduce the size of your breasts and sculpt a shape that more closely resembles your vision for yourself.

There are two main surgical techniques used in treating gynecomastia; liposuction and excision. Depending on the particulars of your case, Dr. Subbio may choose to treat your condition with one or both of these tactics:

  • Liposuction allows Dr. Subbio to resculpt the chest by removing fatty deposits that increase the size of the breasts. It is less invasive than excisional gynecomastia surgery, but it also has certain limitations in the amount of size it can reduce and the final appearance of the skin.

  • Excision allows Dr. Subbio to remove excess fat or skin and resculpt the breast to your desired final shape. Dr. Subbio takes care to minimize pain and scarring through this procedure, but it is more invasive than liposuction alone.

How is Gynecomastia Surgery Performed?

After the incisions are made, Dr. Subbio will remove excess skin and any excess glandular tissue, if necessary. When fat is present, he will use liposuction to remove it. While it’s rare, some patients may need to have their areolas and nipples repositioned. The incisions are then sutured closed. Gynecomastia surgery usually takes 2 – 3 hours depending on the patient’s unique situation. You’ll be anesthetized during your surgery, so you’ll feel no pain. All surgeries involve some discomfort after the anesthesia wears off, though.

If glandular tissue must be removed during the surgery, general anesthesia may be used. If only fat and skin are to be removed, you may be able to have your surgery using local anesthesia and sedation. Either way, after a short recovery period you will be able to return home the same day. We’ll give you complete instructions and pain medication to help you get through your recovery as easy as possible. Plus, you can text or call Dr. Subbio at any time if you have any questions. The best part is, your results are permanent.

Recovery After Gynecomastia Surgery

You can expect some swelling and a feeling of tightness for about two weeks. We’ll remove your sutures about a week after your surgery. Regardless of the type of anesthesia used, gynecomastia surgery is an outpatient procedure. Only in rare cases is a hospital stay required. You should be able to go home the same day, but you must have someone available to drive you home, as you will be groggy for a while.

It’s best if you sleep sitting up for the first few nights. This will prevent swelling and will probably be more comfortable for you. For a period of six weeks, you should sleep on your back rather than face down or on your sides. We ask our Philadelphia Gynecomastia Surgery patients to refrain from strenuous exercise for about six weeks. Most men go back to work within a week unless their job is physically demanding.
