Excess tissue in the male breast can be a source of great anxiety and embarrassment.
Dr. Subbio performs Gynecomastia Surgery (also known as Male Breast Reduction) on adolescents and adults alike, eliminating excess skin and glandular tissue through well-concealed incisions. Through gynecomastia surgery, Dr. Subbio sculpts the chest tissues to a flat and masculine form. Patients experience increased confidence and a renewed sense of self after ridding themselves of what can often be a truly anxiety-inducing condition.
Gynecomastia causes male breasts to form. In boys and young men, the cause is usually hormonal. In older men, the condition results from excess fat and lax skin.
Gynecomastia is not serious, but when hormonal issues are involved, it might be associated with thyroid problems or even cancer. Young men with the condition should see a physician to determine if a disease is present. When hormonal issues are involved, glandular tissue will probably be removed during the surgery.
For our patients in Philadelphia gynecomastia surgery is a way to surgically correct the sagging skin and excess fatty tissue caused by gynecomastia. Whether the cause is hormonal or aging, Dr. Subbio can create a treatment plan to reduce the size of your breasts and sculpt a shape that more closely resembles your vision for yourself.
There are two main surgical techniques used in treating gynecomastia; liposuction and excision. Depending on the particulars of your case, Dr. Subbio may choose to treat your condition with one or both of these tactics:
Liposuction allows Dr. Subbio to resculpt the chest by removing fatty deposits that increase the size of the breasts. It is less invasive than excisional gynecomastia surgery, but it also has certain limitations in the amount of size it can reduce and the final appearance of the skin.
Excision allows Dr. Subbio to remove excess fat or skin and resculpt the breast to your desired final shape. Dr. Subbio takes care to minimize pain and scarring through this procedure, but it is more invasive than liposuction alone.
If you have gynecomastia, a condition that results in enlarged breast tissue in men and boys, Male Breast Reduction might be a good choice for you to achieve a masculine-looking chest.
During your consultation for gynecomastia surgery Philadelphia plastic surgeon, Dr. Subbio will perform a physical examination to determine if the procedure is right for you. He will then explain what you can expect during the procedure.
After the incisions are made, Dr. Subbio will remove excess skin and any excess glandular tissue, if necessary. When fat is present, he will use liposuction to remove it. While it’s rare, some patients may need to have their areolas and nipples repositioned. The incisions are then sutured closed. Gynecomastia surgery usually takes 2 - 3 hours depending on the patient’s unique situation. You’ll be anesthetized during your surgery, so you’ll feel no pain. All surgeries involve some discomfort after the anesthesia wears off, though.
If glandular tissue must be removed during the surgery, general anesthesia may be used. If only fat and skin are to be removed, you may be able to have your surgery using local anesthesia and sedation. Either way, after a short recovery period you will be able to return home the same day. We’ll give you complete instructions and pain medication to help you get through your recovery as easy as possible. Plus, you can text or call Dr. Subbio at any time if you have any questions. The best part is, your results are permanent.

You can expect some swelling and a feeling of tightness for about two weeks. We’ll remove your sutures about a week after your surgery. Regardless of the type of anesthesia used, gynecomastia surgery is an outpatient procedure. Only in rare cases is a hospital stay required. You should be able to go home the same day, but you must have someone available to drive you home, as you will be groggy for a while.
It’s best if you sleep sitting up for the first few nights. This will prevent swelling and will probably be more comfortable for you. For a period of six weeks, you should sleep on your back rather than face down or on your sides. We ask our Philadelphia Gynecomastia Surgery patients to refrain from strenuous exercise for about six weeks. Most men go back to work within a week unless their job is physically demanding.
Back to work: | 5 to 7 days |
More strenuous activity: | 2 to 3 weeks |
Swelling and bruising: | 3 to 6 months |
A compression garment must be worn: | 6-8 weeks |
The most important factor regarding the cost of your procedure is your satisfaction. You want to be happy with your results after the first procedure. This minimizes the cost (financial and physical) of having to go through revisional procedures.
If you want your gynecomastia surgery in Philadelphia done right the first time, Dr. Subbio offers financial options to make sure that money is not a barrier to you receiving the expert care you need for your surgery. Our trained and helpful staff can answer your questions about financing to make sure you get your gynecomastia handled safely and swiftly with Dr. Subbio.
For the most part, yes, although there may be some residual swelling for a few weeks.
You will wear a compression garment for about six weeks. We’ll also give you instructions for taking care of your incisions and for washing immediately after your surgery. Ice packs may also be helpful to keep swelling to a minimum.
There are scars after this surgery. If Dr. Subbio is able to make incisions only around the areolas, the scars won’t be that visible once the incisions have healed. If other incisions have to be made, there may be more visible scars. These will fade and become smoother and less noticeable over time, however.

The incisions vary, although the most common ones are around the dark skin of the areolas so that the scars will be less visible. If you have significant excess skin, however, other incisions may have to be made in order to excise all of it and give you a flatter, masculine chest.
Some men have liposuction simultaneously with their Male Breast Reduction surgery in order to remove excess fat from the love-handle area, flanks, or abdomen.
