Dermal Filler FAQs

Dermal filler is one of the most popular treatments at Subbio Plastic Surgery and Medical Spa. Dr. Christian Subbio is well known Plastic Surgeon. He is board certified and well known for his artistry in achieving natural results. Below are a few frequently asked questions regarding dermal fillers:

Dermal fillers are soft injectable gels that are injected beneath the skin’s surface to smooth out fine lines, wrinkles, and restore lost volume. These gels are composed of Hyaluronic Acid (HA) which is a substance found in human skin cells. HA works by drawing in water to augment the skin. This is not permanent, eventually it is absorbed into the body.

Generally, basic dermal fillers require no anesthetic.

If you are interested in having your lips injected this can tend to be a bit painful so we recommend topical numbing as well as a dental block.

The procedure itself is simple and straightforward, involving an initial needle stick at the point of injection to then be followed by injection of the filler using a cannula, which is a blunt tip needle. This typically takes between 15-30 minutes. Redness, swelling and tenderness can be present for a day or 2 post injection. Results can be seen immediately. Optimal results can be maintained over time.

The amount of filler needed for each person varies. Most Hyaluronic Acid dermal fillers come as 1 ml. This is equivalent to 1/5th of a teaspoon. The amount needed depends on what you are trying to correct, your age, degree of volume loss, and which filler is being used. There are a few places where 1 ml is enough to show significant  differences. This includes: lips, nose, and tear troughs. For the rest of the face you will most likely need more than one syringe.

Common side effects can include redness, swelling, and bruising at the injection site. The filler may also show up as tiny hard lumps. Rare side effects, while less common, you should be aware of infection, granulomas, blindness, and tissue death.

Dermal fillers may be used in areas on the face that loses volume when aging. Fillers are used to replace volume loss and structural support, giving a more youthful appearance. The aim is to make the face more rejuvenated.

For instance, the lips may be injected to improve shape, size, and symmetry. The cheeks can be injected to make the face structural more defined. An under developed chin may be injected to give the area more projection. The nose can be injected to improve shape and contour.

Results are typically seen right after treatment depending on swelling. Results will gradually improve over 2-4 weeks. Filler can last between 6-18 months depends which area is treated. The longevity varies from person to person depending on how you metabolize the filler and how much filler is placed.

Yes. Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a substance which occurs naturally in the cells of the skin, thus there is no risk of allergic reactions. Even people with food sensitivities can receive these fillers safely. The brands of dermal fillers we use are available in more than 90 countries and have been used as an injectable cosmetic treatment for more than two decades with an excellent safety record.
