Lip Enhancement FAQs

If you have any of the following, Lip Enhancement (also sometimes called Lip Augmentation) might be a good choice for you:

  • Thin lips
  • Uneven lips
  • Droopy mouth corners
  • Lines and wrinkles around the mouth

Absolutely! During your consultation, Dr. Subbio will ask you what bothers you about the way your lips look. Then, he’ll tell you whether Lip Enhancement will give you the results you want, and he’ll explain what you can expect. He’ll even hand-draw you a projected result right in the office!

Your own fat can be used instead of dermal fillers to plump your lips. In this case, Liposuction is performed on your lower body, extracting fat from your abdomen or thighs. This is a surgical procedure. The fat is then treated and purified using a centrifuge, after which it’s injected into your lips.

The dermal fillers used for Lip Augmentation consist primarily of hyaluronic acid, which is a substance already present in the body. The injections restore the hyaluronic acid, which plumps the lips in a natural way.

The Lidocaine and numbing cream prevent the injections from hurting, although you might still feel a slight sting. Liposuction doesn’t hurt during the procedure due to the anesthesia used.

You can return to work immediately after Lip Enhancement with dermal fillers. In fact, you can have the treatment during lunch and go right back to work, if you wish.

If you have had Facial Fat Grafting, you will need to take a few days to a week off from work due to the Liposuction.

There are no scars from Lip Enhancement injections. You might have very small scars on the lower body where the fat was extracted during Liposuction.

The results of your Lip Enhancement injections are immediate, but post-treatment swelling may make your lips look fuller for about a week.

Many people who opt for Lip Enhancement decide to also have dermal fillers or fat injections in other areas of the face that have lost volume, such as the nasolabial folds from the nose to the mouth, marionette lines from the mouth to the chin, hollowed cheeks, hollowed temples, or sagging jowls.

While permanent lip implants are an option, most Lip Enhancement treatments are accomplished with dermal fillers or fat injections rather than surgery.

The dermal fillers most often used for lip enhancement are Juvederm or Restylane, which add volume to make your lips fuller. If your lips are uneven or drooping at the corners, Dr. Subbio uses his artistic abilities to place the fillers in just the right places to either lift the corners or make your lips more symmetrical. The needle is small and well-tolerated, and this is not a surgical procedure.

No. Dermal fillers contain Lidocaine within the formula to numb the area. A numbing cream is also applied prior to your injections.

If you are getting Facial Fat Grafting, Liposuction can usually be done using a local anesthetic and sedation. A numbing cream is then applied to the lips before the fat injections.

Dermal filler injections should take no more than 30 minutes. If you are having Facial Fat Grafting, the Liposuction and injections take 1-3 hours total.

You need no recovery period after Lip Enhancement with dermal fillers. Some patients have some mild swelling and bruising for a few days.

With Facial Fat Grafting, you will have some swelling, bruising, and tenderness in the areas that had Liposuction. Some patients also have mild swelling and bruising of the lips from the injections.

Some people experience slight bruising of the lips, but it’s usually minimal and goes away quickly. You will experience some bruising in the Liposuction sites.

Not only is Dr. Subbio a trained artist, but he has many years of experience with Lip Enhancement. He knows how to avoid over-filling your lips during this treatment.

Most dermal filler injections last 6-12 months. Fat grafting is long-lasting, but about 25% of the fat is re-absorbed by the body. Dr. Subbio will tell you how long you can expect your Lip Enhancement to last.

We think there are several reasons! Here are just a few:
  • He gives all of his patients his cell phone number, so if you have any concerns after your Lip Enhancement, you can easily reach him to ask questions.
  • He’s a trained artist, and you’re his canvas. It’s the perfect marriage of science and artistry. In fact, he’ll hand-draw his projected results right in front of you during your consultation.
  • He’s fun! He likes to joke with his patients and put them at ease. Plus, we maintain a small office where we treat our patients like a part of the family.
  • He won’t try to convince you to have a procedure that isn’t best for you. He’d rather lose your business than sign you up for a procedure he isn’t 100% behind. And if he thinks you need a surgery or treatment he doesn’t offer, he’ll recommend a different surgeon for you.
