Eyelid Surgery

Upper Blepharoplasty

Much like the brows, the skin of the upper eyelids can droop and become excessive, gathering over the normally wide and bright “windows to the soul”. This excess skin can not only make one look tried and drowsy, but even obstruct one’s vision! Through hidden incisions, Dr. Subbio can remove this excess skin and restore the smooth, attractive contours of the youthful upper lid crease.

Lower Blepharoplasty

Have you looked back at old pictures of yourself and noted how smooth and youthful your eyes once were? Lower lids can suffer from a not only gathering of excess and wrinkled skin, but also from bulging of fat and “bags”, giving a sleep-deprived and aged appearance. Through hidden incisions, Dr. Subbio can remove this excess skin and fat to restore the smooth contours of youth. The effects can be dramatic in how these small moves can rejuvenate one’s face.

Eyelid Lift FAQ's

If you have any of the following, an Eyelid Lift might be a good choice for you:

  • Sagging or puffy upper eyelids
  • Loose skin under your eyebrows
  • Bags under your eyes
  • Drooping lower eyelids

A Brow Lift raises drooping eyebrows and alleviates forehead wrinkles, while also lifting slightly sagging upper eyelids. Eyelid Surgery corrects more severely drooping upper eyelids, particularly if the eyelid skin needs to be trimmed in order to tighten the area.

A Brow Lift also doesn’t address lower eyelid issues.

In some cases, yes, but for those patients who need a significant correction, it may be necessary to have the surgeries separately.

No. Eyelid Surgery is an outpatient procedure, so after a short period of recovery time, you can go home the same day, provided you have someone available to drive you home.

The incision for a Lower Eyelid Lift varies depending upon the patient. If excess skin needs to be removed, the incision is made just under the lower eyelashes where the eyelash line will hide the scar.

If only fat within an undereye bag, and no skin, is to be removed, the incision can usually be made on the inside of the lower eyelid. This is called transconjunctival surgery.

In either case, the fat is removed, and the incisions are closed with dissolvable sutures.

You’ll be anesthetized during your surgery, so you’ll feel no pain. All surgeries involve some discomfort after the anesthesia wears off, though. Most people find that the discomfort after Eyelid Surgery is minimal, and we’ll give you pain medication to help you get through your recovery as easily as possible. Plus, you can text or call Dr. Subbio at any time with your questions!

Definitely! Dr. Subbio is dedicated to making sure you recover as easily as possible with excellent results.

You should be able to wear contact lenses in about 10 days.

Some patients do experience some bruising after Eyelid Surgery, but it’s usually minimal and goes away quickly.

The scars from an Upper Eyelid Lift are hidden in the creases of the lids. A Lower Eyelid Lift may have a visible scar just under the lower eyelashes, but it is hidden by the lash line. If the incision is made on the inside of the lower eyelid, there is no visible scar.

Yes, but there may be some residual swelling for a few months that prevent you from seeing the final results.

Absolutely! During your consultation, Dr. Subbio will ask you what bothers you about the way you look. Then, he’ll tell you exactly which procedure will give you the results you’re after, and he’ll explain what you can expect. He’ll even hand-draw you a projected result right in the office!

Depending on the condition of your eyelids, eyebrows, and forehead, a Brow Lift might be a better procedure for you. If this is the case, Dr. Subbio will fully explain the results you can expect from the surgery he recommends.

An Upper Eyelid Lift (Upper Blepharoplasty) corrects loose, sagging skin and excess fat on the upper eyelids. A Lower Eyelid Lift (Lower Blepharoplasty) corrects undereye bags and/or sagging skin on the lower eyelid.

No. In most cases, a local anesthetic and sedation are sufficient for Eyelid Surgery. While you won’t be fully asleep, you’ll be very relaxed, and you won’t feel any pain. You’ll be groggy afterward, though, so please bring someone along to make sure you get home safely.

One small incision is made in an eyelid crease, where the scar will remain hidden. Loose skin is removed, as well as any excess fat in the drooping eyelids, and the area is tightened enough for a more youthful, but natural-looking appearance. Dr. Subbio is careful not to over-correct the area. The incisions are stitched with sutures that usually dissolve on their own.

The surgery usually takes about 1 hour.

You can expect some swelling, mild bruising, and a feeling of tightness for 7-10 days. Sutures will either dissolve on their own or be removed in our office within a week of your surgery. Applying cold compresses to your eyes, as well as sleeping with your head elevated, will help to reduce swelling. You might even prefer to sleep sitting up for the first couple of nights.

Your eyes may water at times and feel excessively dry at other times. We will give you eye drops to ease these conditions and prevent post-surgical infection.

We will also give you instructions for cleaning the incisions 4-6 times per day, including a lubricant to apply to them.

With some makeup or sunglasses to cover any residual bruising, you should be able to go out in public within 2-3 days.

Most people go back to work within 7-10 days.

We ask that you refrain from strenuous exercise or heavy lifting for about 3 weeks.

Yes, but it’s better if you sleep on your back with your head elevated, and you might want to sleep upright for the first couple of nights.

They’ll last a long time, but the aging process does continue. Depending on your age when you have the surgery, you may need revision Upper and/or Lower Eyelid Surgery at some point in your life.

We think there are several reasons! Here are just a few:

  • He gives all his patients his cell phone number. He’ll call you the night after your surgery to check on you, as well as the next morning. And he’ll make sure your recovery is as comfortable as possible.
  • He’s a trained artist, and you’re his canvas. It’s the perfect marriage of science and artistry. In fact, he’ll hand-draw his projected results right in front of you during your consultation.
  • He’s fun! He likes to joke with his patients and put them at ease. Plus, we maintain a small office where we treat our patients like a part of the family.
  • He won’t try to convince you to have a procedure that isn’t best for you. He’d rather lose your business than sign you up for a procedure he isn’t 100% behind. And if he thinks you need a procedure he doesn’t offer, he’ll recommend a different surgeon for you.
