Male Breast Reduction FAQs

If you have gynecomastia, a condition that results in enlarged breast tissue in men and boys, Male Breast Reduction might be a good choice for you to achieve a masculine-looking chest.

Absolutely! During your consultation, Dr. Subbio will examine you and tell you if Male Breast Reduction is recommended for you. He will then explain what you can expect during the procedure. He’ll even hand-draw you a projected result right in the office so that you can see how you will look after surgery!

Regardless of the type of anesthesia used, Male Breast Reduction is an outpatient procedure. Only in rare cases is a hospital stay required. You should be able to go home the same day, but you must have someone available to drive you home, as you will be groggy for a while.

After the incisions are made, Dr. Subbio will remove excess skin and any excess glandular tissue, if necessary. If fat is present, he will use Liposuction to remove it. (Read more about Liposuction.)

While it’s rare, some patients may need to have their areolas and nipples repositioned.

The incisions are then sutured closed.

You’ll be anesthetized during your surgery, so you’ll feel no pain. All surgeries involve some discomfort after the anesthesia wears off, though. We’ll give you complete instructions and pain medication to help you get through your recovery as easily as possible. Plus, you can text or call Dr. Subbio at any time with your questions!

Most men go back to work within a week unless their job is physically demanding.

We ask that you refrain from strenuous exercise for about six weeks.

It’s best if you sleep sitting up for the first few nights. This will prevent swelling and will probably be more comfortable for you. For a period of six weeks, you should sleep on your back rather than your sides.

For the most part, yes, although there may be some residual swelling for a few weeks.

We think there are several reasons! Here are just a few:
  • He gives all of his patients his cell phone number. He’ll call you the night after your surgery to check on you, as well as the next morning. And he’ll make sure your recovery is as comfortable as possible.
  • He’s a trained artist, and you’re his canvas. It’s the perfect marriage of science and artistry. In fact, he’ll hand-draw his projected results right in front of you during your consultation.
  • He’s fun! He likes to joke with his patients and put them at ease. Plus, we maintain a small office where we treat our patients like a part of the family.
  • He won’t try to convince you to have a procedure that isn’t best for you. He’d rather lose your business than sign you up for a procedure he isn’t 100% behind. And if he thinks you need a surgery or treatment he doesn’t offer, he’ll recommend a different surgeon for you.

Gynecomastia causes male breasts to form. In boys and young men, the cause is usually hormonal. In older men, the condition results from excess fat and lax skin. Gynecomastia is not serious, but when hormonal issues are involved, it might be associated with thyroid problems or even cancer. Young men with the condition should see a physician to determine if a disease is present.

When hormonal issues are involved, glandular tissue will probably be removed during the surgery.

It depends on your particular case. If glandular tissue must be removed during the surgery, general anesthesia may be used. If only fat and skin are to be removed, you may be able to have your surgery using local anesthesia and sedation.

The incisions vary, although the most common ones are around the dark skin of the areolas so that the scars will be less visible. If you have significant excess skin, however, other incisions may have to be made in order to excise all of it and give you a flatter, masculine chest.

The surgery takes 1-2 hours, depending upon the patient.

You can expect some swelling and a feeling of tightness for about two weeks. We’ll remove your sutures about a week after your surgery.

You can expect some bruising after Male Breast Reduction that will resolve after about two weeks.

There are scars after this surgery. If Dr. Subbio is able to make incisions only around the areolas, the scars won’t be that visible once the incisions have healed. If other incisions have to be made, there may be more visible scars. These will fade and become smoother and less noticeable over time, however.

You will wear a compression garment for about six weeks. We’ll also give you instructions for taking care of your incisions and for washing immediately after your surgery. Ice packs may also be helpful to keep swelling to a minimum.

Some men have Liposuction simultaneously with their Male Breast Reduction surgery in order to remove excess fat from the love-handle area, flanks, or abdomen.
